Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones was unveiled a month ago in New York with much bigger screens ditching the physical home button not like their predecessors and introduced a new virtual assistant.
The new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ now sports a larger screens despite that both devices has the same size as the famed S7 and S7 Edge. Both models feature a curve round display on their sides making it kinda similar as the Galaxy Edge.

S8 and S8+ displays measure 5.8 inches (14.7cm) and 6.2 inches (15.7cm) respectively which is quite longer and more stretched to the top edge and bottom of both the phones. The screen, which has 18.5:9 ratio as the company suggests, enable users to run two apps at the same time and side by side which I think another edge for the flagships.
As the display stretches, Samsung’s logo is no longer present on the front and the same manner as the home button but it was replaced with an on-screen icon key which has the same function and to compete with Huawei and LG’s. Samsung points out the new virtual button have built-in pressure sensor and vibration module to deliver feedback while using it.
Moreover, the screens now supports HDR video playback which is more brighter and crisper as opposed to their predecessors although with the same resolution as before.
The Galaxy S8’s body is quite slimmer than the S7 while the Galaxy S8+ has a wider build but lighter than the S7 Edge which both can still be used with one hand.
While the flagships reveal to have a new virtual button, it also has new virtual assistant named Bixby based on the technology used by the rival Apple to its own assistant Siri, which the Korean company acquired from its previous developers. It’s activated by a dedicated button on the phones’ side and let apps controlled by voice. Furthermore, Bixby also allows users to follow-up questions, combine voice and physical commands through its context-aware feature. It can also be used to identify objects with the use of its camera and works flawlessly with some of Google’s handy apps. Although, for now, it was only introduced by Samsung to only recognize English and Korean voices which works great in the demo during its launch.
In addition to physique and software improvements, the two Galaxy phones also features a more thorough 8-megapixel front camera with faster autofocus and a 12-megapixel rear camera with better contrast and crispness. Samsung also upgraded the devices’ processors, both the CPU and GPU, to a more powerful and energy efficient nano chips. Besides, there’s the new iris scanner which allow users to use eye prints as an alternative to the usual fingerprints.
Samsung also introduced a range of interesting accessories to play along with the S8s. These includes the second generation 360-degree camera, an overhauled virtual reality headset which now has its built-in motion-sensing controller and a new dock that links the phones to computer peripherals such as the usual monitor, keyboard and a wireless mouse, allowing users a different mobile experience and used it like a stand-alone Android-powered computer.
The new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be released in the market on April 21st and priced at Php39,990 and Php45,990 respectively in the Philippines.
